How to Minimize Scars
The appearance of scars after an injury or surgery can be very bothersome to many. One of my friends asked me after her shoulder surgery how she could minimize scar formation. While it is impossible to prevent scar formation, there are ways to minimize their appearance:
- For new non-infected wounds, clean the wound with water and soap, and apply petrolatum. Petrolatum which will keep the wound hydrated and minimize scar formation. If your wound is infected, you may use Neosporin ointment instead.
- After the wound heals, massage it gently and regularly to help flatten it. Also keep it from sun exposure as this may make the scar look worse. You may also apply sunscreen to the healed wound to protect it from the sun.
- After the wound heals, you can try applying a silicone gel or a silicone sheet. Silicone gel is better for smaller areas (face, elbows, knees), whereas silicone sheets are better for larger areas. One good brand is ScarAway, which comes as both a silicone gel and sheet. Kelo-cote is another good brand that only comes as a gel. Mederma Advanced Scar Gel is also very popular, but there is not that much evidence that it works. Results usually take 6 months for newer scars, and longer for older scars. Do not expect a miracle, but they are worth a try and you can order them online below or at your local pharmacy.
- Products that do not have much evidence for working for scars: aloe, cocoa butter, or vitamins A and E.
When should I consult a doctor?
Over-the-counter products like ScarAway usually take about 6 months to see any improvement. If you do not see any improvement by 6 months or have any concerns before that time, please consult a Dermatologist.
